Luna Meditation is the ultimate internet cliché — a purring kitten set against an evolving soft pastel background. Luna arrived at her new Melbourne home at the same moment as the first Australian and New Zealand COVID-19 lockdowns. My nieces filmed her and sent the footage across the Tasman. The work is intended as a calming meditation — a small act of connection and comfort at a time of distance and uncertainty.

The Philosopher (Phoebe Falcon)
776 individual portraits painted over 353 hours
6 'residue' paintings, 60 x 45 cm, oil on board

South Melbourne studio, 22 May 2011 - 15 January 2012

Combining traditional analogue oil painting with digital, I generate multiple outcomes. Using old school stop-motion animation techniques, this intimate, handcrafted film explores self-making and the experience of being human. In a world increasingly wedded to slick digital production, The Philosopher extravagantly foregrounds the handmade — celebrating painting as dedicated practice, a private, conscious meditation of ritual and habit.
